Welcome to another installment of the monthly ranting of a young
psychotic white boy, otherwise known as Judgment Calls. This month
I’m going to be taking a long rambling look at one of my favorite monthly comics, Young
Justice.
Yeah yeah yeah, I know what some of you are thinking... it’s stupid fluff
spandex blah blah blah exactly what’s wrong with comics nowadays
etc... What I’m wondering is, what are you doing readin’ my shit if you’re
thinking that, I think you took a wrong link somewhere along the line. Anyway,
people like that are just mad it doesn’t have gallons-o-blood and T&A.
Now I enjoy T&A and violence as much as the next guy, don’t get me
wrong... Regardless of whatever my point was, this is a good title.
This is year three of the title, or is it into the second year...
It’s been going for over two years, so it could be called 2 years old, but
er... damnit... it’s on issue #27. I haven’t talked about Young Justice
since "Sins of Youth," so I feel that it must be discussed. Let’s
talk about the creative team, which is the same as it has been since the
beginning: Peter David writing it, Todd Nauck drawing it, and Larry
Stucker inking it and I must say it’s a great team. Peter David is a great
writer, famed for lopping off Aquaman’s hand and making Supergirl
popular again. His writing seems to balance out utter seriousness with the most
odd situations imaginable, it grips you once you get into it. Nauck’s art
is fantastic, whenever I see YJ done by any other artists I don’t like it,
Nauck’s vision of YJ is ingrained in my brain. Stucker, uh, he makes
Nauck look good...
Onto the team lineup, we still have Robin, Superboy, Impulse,
Wonder Girl, and Secret as our core team. Currently Empress seems to
have all but officially joined, unless I missed it, but I’m sure she’s sticking around.
Arrowette has hung up her shafts (that sounds naughtier then it is), and
is currently enjoying a role in the supporting cast as a regular
high school student, who happens to be a gold medal winner and
secretly an ex-superhero. As long as we’re on the subject of the supporting cast,
then it might as well be mentioned that Red Tornado is still ‘looking after’
the kids, and recently his adopted daughter has gone to school with
Cissie (Arrowette) and is her roommate.
Also worthy of note is that Doiby Dickles (golden age GL ‘sidekick’ (if
you could consider a grumpy cabbie a sidekick) has been hanging
around a lot, but will probably be shoving off after the current story ends. Another
character hanging around is ‘Lil Lobo. I gotta admit, where as I enjoy
most of Peter David’s twisted sense of humor, I HATE this ‘de-aged’ Lobo,
damnit THAT’S NOT LOBO, that ain’t the murdering immortal smut mouthed
beer guzzlin’ psychotic bounty-huntin’ MAIN MAN we all came to know and
love.
But I digress...
I dunno what it is, but Peter David seems to be on a sports kick, after
Cissie’s taking part in the ‘Australian games’ and winning a gold medal,
and now the battle over the Myrg has digressed into a baseball game, a
super powered BASEBALL GAME! I shit you not. Now at first the
whole idea had me confused, however they pull it off quite well. There are several
moments that I really enjoyed, "LOOK ITS A KID IN RED AND GREEN
TIGHTS! LETS SURRENDER!" - Issue #27 and no that’s not sarcasm. Go read it,
I’m not explaining it. Anyway, it’s a good fun read, something to brighten your
day and get at least a chuckle out of you. I suggest picking it up. Till
next month when my insanity reaches new heights...or is it depths?
